Start off by showing your class the documentary. Before the documentary do a KWL grid to see what they know already. We also did a cover page in our books to start the unit.

This is a two week writing resource focusing on description. It uses parts from chapters 1 -4 of War Horse. It is for the children to write about leaving the pen after being sold to arriving at the stables. This goes through a writing process in the following format:
Analysing Joey’s feelings in the first chapter
Key vocabulary searching
Reading and analysing example texts and high quality descriptive writing from other novels
Planning the writing
Drafting the first paragraph (Joey leaving the pen after being sold) with modelled writing
Drafting the second paragraph (The journey to the stables) with modelled writing
Drafting the third paragraph (Arriving at the stables) with modelled writing
Big writing the final piece
Each lesson also has a grammar focus beginning with identifying main clauses and subordinate clauses and then moving onto relative clauses in the second week.
